Hand Counted Paper Ballot Page

This page is devoted to a discussion of hand counted paper ballots.  Since many academics and activists are only interested in these, we need to have a page devoted to this type of election 'system' and its drawbacks.  Our chart below is very basic.  In some cases a system will get a thumbs down because of how it is implemented, not because there is some inherent flaw in the basic technology.  However, we are attempting to get as clear a picture as we can on where various groups stand on various voting systems.  Give us time to include most major activist groups; there are a lot of them these days.

Disclaimer:

We also understand that some groups have a "hidden agenda" and as such they publicly profess liking this or that system, but from other comments and articles it is clear that they oppose such technology.  For example, many activist groups now claim to support optical scan systems.  They do so since they are certified and can be used to replace DREs (which they hate).  But the real truth is that it is a stop gap, and as soon as optical scan systems are ubiquitous they will attack them too.  Therefore, our rankings reflect OUR analysis and not the groups' "official" position.

KEY:    =Accept the use of technology perhaps with some restrictions

=Rejects the use of this technology

=Unable to determine their position, or they have not evaluated this technology.

Stay tuned.       If you visit their site (see link above) you will see 2 things up front: one, in the left column is a heading called, "Why we need Hand Counted Paper Ballots".  Two, you will see a quote from Ellen Theisen which says, "An electronic ballot is a secret from the voter who cast it."
